1756-RIO Functional Description
The Allen-Bradley 1756-RIO Remote I/O module connects a ControlLogix processor to a Remote I/O (RIO) network, acting as an adapter or scanner. It efficiently handles block transfer (BT), digital, specialty, and analog data without needing message instructions, ensuring seamless data communication between the controller and remote I/O adapters. Part of the 1756 ControlLogix Communication Module Series, the Allen-Bradley 1756-RIO Remote I/O module is shipped in scanner mode by default and supports up to 32 physical adapters. It is versatile, accommodating all remote I/O baud rates and partial rack combinations.
As a scanner, the Allen-Bradley 1756-RIO Remote I/O module regularly updates block transfers at all locations. When used as an adapter, it allows the controller to communicate with a pre-existing system scanner. This module requires a 1756 chassis power supply and provides continuous isolation of 50V, with basic insulation between RIO communication lines and the backplane. For optimal installation, power to the chassis should be turned off to prevent electrical arcing.
The Allen-Bradley 1756-RIO Remote I/O module is designed for installation in any slot of a ControlLogix chassis, supporting a wide range of chassis models such as 1756-A4, 1756-A7, 1756-A10, and more. It supports simplex and redundant controller topologies and is compatible with various power supplies, including the 1756-PA72/C and 1756-PB75/B, among others. Furthermore, it can interface with Human Machine Interface (HMI) systems and SCADA systems via Allen-Bradley communication cards.
The Allen-Bradley 1756-RIO Remote I/O module can handle up to 10 scheduled I/O connections and draws 450 mA at 5.1V DC and 5 mA at 24V DC. It dissipates 2.5 Watts of power and generates 8.5 BTU/hr of thermal dissipation, making it a reliable and efficient choice for complex networked control systems. The physical cable used to establish RIO connections is the 1771-CD or Belden 9463 (Blue Hose) cable.

ControlLogix System Overview
The ControlLogix system provides discrete, drives, motion, process, and safety control together with communication and state-of-the-art
I/O in a small, cost-competitive package. The system is modular, so you can design, build, and modify it efficiently with significant savings in
training and engineering.
A simple ControlLogix system consists of a standalone controller and I/O modules in one chassis. For a more comprehensive system, use the
following:
• Multiple controllers in one chassis
• Multiple controllers joined across networks
• I/O in multiple platforms that are distributed in many locations and connected over multiple I/O links
• Select ControlLogix products are available with a conformal coating that adds a layer of protection when exposed to harsh, corrosive
environments. Products with a conformal coating have a ‘K’ suffix at the end of the catalog number.
The ControlLogix controller is part of the Logix 5000™ family of controllers.
• ControlLogix controllers can monitor and control I/O across the ControlLogix backplane, and over I/O links. ControlLogix controllers
can communicate over EtherNet/IP, ControlNet, DeviceNet, DH+™, Remote I/O, and RS-232-C (DF1/DH-485 protocol) networks and
many third-party process and device networks.
• The controller can be placed into any slot of a ControlLogix chassis and multiple controllers can be installed in the same chassis.
Multiple controllers in the same chassis communicate with each other over the backplane (just as controllers can communicate over
networks) but operate independently.
• To provide communication for a ControlLogix 5570 controller, install the appropriate communication interface module into the
chassis. ControlLogix 5580 controllers have a built-in EtherNet/IP port.
