1756-L55M23 Functional Description
The Allen-Bradley 1756-L55M23 is a high-performance controller from the ControlLogix series within the Logix5000 family. This controller is equipped with 1.5 KB of data and logic memory, 208 KB of I/O memory, and integrated non-volatile backup memory, ensuring reliable performance and data retention even during power loss.
One of the key features of the 1756-L55M23 is its dual-CPU architecture. The Logix CPU handles application code and message execution, while the backplane CPU is responsible for managing data flow across the backplane and communication with I/O devices. The controller supports multiple communication protocols, including Ethernet/IP, ControlNet, and DeviceNet, enabling seamless integration with other devices and controllers in the system.
For data sharing, the PLC Processor Module 1756-L55M23 can produce and consume system-shared tags over networks like EtherNet/IP or ControlNet. It also offers a multitasking feature, allowing it to allocate processing time to different operations in a given application. This ensures more efficient use of resources and better performance in complex automation tasks.
The 1756-L55M23 ControlLogix Controller and Memory Board includes built-in fault diagnostics and a fault handler, making it easier to troubleshoot and maintain. It also provides visual indicators like an I/O LED to alert users of any I/O communication issues, flashing green in case of a failure. For backup, the controller supports the 1756-BA1 or 1756-BATM battery, which requires regular maintenance to ensure uninterrupted operation.
In conclusion, the 1756-L55M23 Series A ControlLogix 5555 controller is a powerful and versatile controller designed to meet the demands of modern automation applications, offering robust communication options, multitasking capabilities, and reliable fault detection.

ControlLogix System Overview
The ControlLogix system provides discrete, drives, motion, process, and safety control together with communication and state-of-the-art
I/O in a small, cost-competitive package. The system is modular, so you can design, build, and modify it efficiently with significant savings in
training and engineering.
A simple ControlLogix system consists of a standalone controller and I/O modules in one chassis. For a more comprehensive system, use the
following:
• Multiple controllers in one chassis
• Multiple controllers joined across networks
• I/O in multiple platforms that are distributed in many locations and connected over multiple I/O links
• Select ControlLogix products are available with a conformal coating that adds a layer of protection when exposed to harsh, corrosive
environments. Products with a conformal coating have a ‘K’ suffix at the end of the catalog number.
The ControlLogix controller is part of the Logix 5000™ family of controllers.
• ControlLogix controllers can monitor and control I/O across the ControlLogix backplane, and over I/O links. ControlLogix controllers
can communicate over EtherNet/IP, ControlNet, DeviceNet, DH+™, Remote I/O, and RS-232-C (DF1/DH-485 protocol) networks and
many third-party process and device networks.
• The controller can be placed into any slot of a ControlLogix chassis and multiple controllers can be installed in the same chassis.
Multiple controllers in the same chassis communicate with each other over the backplane (just as controllers can communicate over
networks) but operate independently.
• To provide communication for a ControlLogix 5570 controller, install the appropriate communication interface module into the
chassis. ControlLogix 5580 controllers have a built-in EtherNet/IP port.
