1756-L65 Functional Description
The Allen-Bradley 1756-L65 is a Series B ControlLogix controller designed for flexible automation and high-performance tasks. It features a built-in RS-232 serial port and 32 MB of user memory for data and logic, along with 478 KB of I/O memory. Users can expand storage using a 128 MB CompactFlash 1756-CF128 memory card, which is the only compatible option for nonvolatile storage. The 1756-L65 advanced ControlLogix processor module is also equipped with a replaceable lithium battery, specifically the 1756-BA2 model. The controller is compatible with various ControlLogix chassis, including the 1756-A4, 1756-A7, 1756-A10, 1756-A13, and 1756-A17 models.
For I/O capabilities, the 1756-L65 ControlLogix controller supports up to 4000 analog I/O points and 128,000 total I/O points, including digital I/O. It has a current draw of 1200 mA at 5.1V DC and 14 mA at 24V DC, with a power dissipation of 3.5 W. The controller's thermal dissipation rate is 11.9 BTU/hr, and it can withstand a continuous isolation voltage of up to 30V. Additionally, the 1756-L65 has been type tested for 60 seconds at 720 V DC to ensure its reliability in harsh environments.
The operating temperature range for the Allen Bradley 1756-L65 advanced ControlLogix processor module is 0 to 60°C, with storage temperatures ranging from -40 to 85°C. It also offers a vibration tolerance of 2 g at 10 to 500 Hz and shock resistance up to 50 g when non-operating. This robust controller is designed to operate in demanding conditions with a humidity tolerance between 5% and 95% noncondensing.
The 1756-L65 CONTROLLOGIX 5580 CONTROLLER offers versatile communication options, supporting protocols such as DeviceNet, ControlNet, EtherNet/IP, Remote I/O, and Modbus via logic. It also accommodates up to 250 controller connections and can handle serial port communications like DF1 and Modbus. However, users should note that its scan time may be slower compared to other ControlLogix 1756-L6x models when using identical projects.

ControlLogix System Overview
The ControlLogix system provides discrete, drives, motion, process, and safety control together with communication and state-of-the-art
I/O in a small, cost-competitive package. The system is modular, so you can design, build, and modify it efficiently with significant savings in
training and engineering.
A simple ControlLogix system consists of a standalone controller and I/O modules in one chassis. For a more comprehensive system, use the
following:
• Multiple controllers in one chassis
• Multiple controllers joined across networks
• I/O in multiple platforms that are distributed in many locations and connected over multiple I/O links
• Select ControlLogix products are available with a conformal coating that adds a layer of protection when exposed to harsh, corrosive
environments. Products with a conformal coating have a ‘K’ suffix at the end of the catalog number.
The ControlLogix controller is part of the Logix 5000™ family of controllers.
• ControlLogix controllers can monitor and control I/O across the ControlLogix backplane, and over I/O links. ControlLogix controllers
can communicate over EtherNet/IP, ControlNet, DeviceNet, DH+™, Remote I/O, and RS-232-C (DF1/DH-485 protocol) networks and
many third-party process and device networks.
• The controller can be placed into any slot of a ControlLogix chassis and multiple controllers can be installed in the same chassis.
Multiple controllers in the same chassis communicate with each other over the backplane (just as controllers can communicate over
networks) but operate independently.
• To provide communication for a ControlLogix 5570 controller, install the appropriate communication interface module into the
chassis. ControlLogix 5580 controllers have a built-in EtherNet/IP port.
