1756-L71S Functional Description
The 1756-L71S is a GuardLogix 5570 controller from Allen-Bradley’s Logix5000 family. Designed for safety-critical applications, this ControlLogix controller integrates dual processors and must be paired with a 1756-L7SP safety module to meet SIL 3 or Cat. 4/PLe standards. A major advantage of the 1756-L71S CONTROLLOGIX 5580 CONTROLLER is its automatic configuration of the safety partner controller, simplifying project development. The controller offers high-speed processing for both motion and high-performance logic.
Equipped with 2MB of user memory, 1MB safety memory, and 0.98MB of I/O memory, the 1756-L71S GuardLogix Logix5571S Processor supports up to 128,000 digital I/O points and 4,000 analog I/O points. It draws 5mA at 1.2V DC and 800mA at 5.1V DC, with a thermal dissipation of 8.5 BTU/hr. The controller also includes a 1GB Secure Digital (SD) card (expandable to 2GB), which serves as optional non-volatile storage.
The 1756-L71S Safety Controller PLC Processor features multiple communication protocols, including Ethernet/IP, ControlNet, and DeviceNet, and supports up to 500 controller connections. It is compatible with various I/O devices through backplane connections or I/O links. For diagnostics, the controller offers a front display that provides runtime information.
Safety-related tasks are programmed using Relay Ladder Logic (RLL), while standard functions can be programmed with other languages like Structured Text and Function Block Diagram. Despite its capabilities, the 1756-L71S ControlLogix Modular Programmable Automation Controller does not support controller redundancy but remains a reliable choice for safety and standard applications.

ControlLogix System Overview
The ControlLogix system provides discrete, drives, motion, process, and safety control together with communication and state-of-the-art
I/O in a small, cost-competitive package. The system is modular, so you can design, build, and modify it efficiently with significant savings in
training and engineering.
A simple ControlLogix system consists of a standalone controller and I/O modules in one chassis. For a more comprehensive system, use the
following:
• Multiple controllers in one chassis
• Multiple controllers joined across networks
• I/O in multiple platforms that are distributed in many locations and connected over multiple I/O links
• Select ControlLogix products are available with a conformal coating that adds a layer of protection when exposed to harsh, corrosive
environments. Products with a conformal coating have a ‘K’ suffix at the end of the catalog number.
The ControlLogix controller is part of the Logix 5000™ family of controllers.
• ControlLogix controllers can monitor and control I/O across the ControlLogix backplane, and over I/O links. ControlLogix controllers
can communicate over EtherNet/IP, ControlNet, DeviceNet, DH+™, Remote I/O, and RS-232-C (DF1/DH-485 protocol) networks and
many third-party process and device networks.
• The controller can be placed into any slot of a ControlLogix chassis and multiple controllers can be installed in the same chassis.
Multiple controllers in the same chassis communicate with each other over the backplane (just as controllers can communicate over
networks) but operate independently.
• To provide communication for a ControlLogix 5570 controller, install the appropriate communication interface module into the
chassis. ControlLogix 5580 controllers have a built-in EtherNet/IP port.
