1756-L83E Functional Description
The Allen-Bradley 1756-L83E is part of the Logix 5585E controller family and features integrated Ethernet communication. This controller comes with an embedded Ethernet port supporting 10/100/1000 Mbps, offering flexibility for basic linear network topologies. For more complex communication setups, additional modules like EtherNet/IP, ControlNet, DeviceNet, and others can be added to expand the system's communication capabilities. The 1756-L83E CONTROLLOGIX 5580 CONTROLLER supports configuration via BOOTP-DHCP utility, allowing the assignment of static or dynamic IP addresses. Dynamic IP settings enhance security by changing the address with each power cycle, minimizing the risk of unauthorized access.
This 1756-L83E Controllogix Controllers is built for high availability with redundancy support, ensuring continued operation if the primary controller fails by switching to the secondary processor. It also supports various I/O systems, such as Flex I/O and POINT I/O, and can communicate with other Allen-Bradley PLCs like PLC 5, SLC 500, and CompactLogix through messaging instructions.
With a focus on EtherNet/IP communication, the 1756-L83E B PLC Processor Module can handle up to 32 tasks and 1,000 programs per task, with a user memory capacity of 10 MB. It includes a preinstalled 2 GB SD card (1784-SD2) for non-volatile storage. The controller is also equipped with a USB Type-B port and an embedded EtherNet port, ensuring versatile connectivity. For optimal performance, only Rockwell Automation SD cards are recommended to prevent data loss or corruption, especially under extreme conditions.
The 1756-L83E ControlLogix Modular Programmable Automation Controller supports up to 250 EtherNet/IP nodes when used with Studio 5000 Logix Designer Version 30 or higher. It also offers robust I/O capabilities, supporting up to 128,000 digital I/O and 4,000 analog I/O points. The controller’s operating range is from 0 to 60°C, with a continuous isolation voltage of 50V and shock/vibration tolerance that ensures reliable performance in industrial environments.

ControlLogix System Overview
The ControlLogix system provides discrete, drives, motion, process, and safety control together with communication and state-of-the-art
I/O in a small, cost-competitive package. The system is modular, so you can design, build, and modify it efficiently with significant savings in
training and engineering.
A simple ControlLogix system consists of a standalone controller and I/O modules in one chassis. For a more comprehensive system, use the
following:
• Multiple controllers in one chassis
• Multiple controllers joined across networks
• I/O in multiple platforms that are distributed in many locations and connected over multiple I/O links
• Select ControlLogix products are available with a conformal coating that adds a layer of protection when exposed to harsh, corrosive
environments. Products with a conformal coating have a ‘K’ suffix at the end of the catalog number.
The ControlLogix controller is part of the Logix 5000™ family of controllers.
• ControlLogix controllers can monitor and control I/O across the ControlLogix backplane, and over I/O links. ControlLogix controllers
can communicate over EtherNet/IP, ControlNet, DeviceNet, DH+™, Remote I/O, and RS-232-C (DF1/DH-485 protocol) networks and
many third-party process and device networks.
• The controller can be placed into any slot of a ControlLogix chassis and multiple controllers can be installed in the same chassis.
Multiple controllers in the same chassis communicate with each other over the backplane (just as controllers can communicate over
networks) but operate independently.
• To provide communication for a ControlLogix 5570 controller, install the appropriate communication interface module into the
chassis. ControlLogix 5580 controllers have a built-in EtherNet/IP port.
