1756-M02AE Functional Description
The Allen-Bradley 1756-M02AE is an advanced analog encoder module designed for motion control applications. This module supports two axes and provides quadrature-position feedback, making it suitable for controlling drives or actuators that require a +/- 10V velocity or torque reference input. The 1756-M02AE ensures that the actuator accurately follows the desired motion profile by using feedback from a quadrature encoder input. It can interface with various rotary and linear transducers that use quadrature-output.
1756-M02AE advanced analog encoder module is compatible with several ControlLogix chassis, including models like the 1756-A4, 1756-A7, 1756-A10, and others. It requires an RTB (Removable Terminal Block) such as the 1756-TBCH or the 1756-TBS6H for proper installation. The 1756-M02AE features a fast loop update rate of 500 microseconds for position and 250 microseconds for velocity, with a torque loop bandwidth of 106 Hz. The module’s digital position and velocity servo loop is controlled by a nested PI algorithm.
In terms of input, the Allen-Bradley 1756-M02AE Analog Encoder (AE) Servo Module accepts incremental AB quadrature encoder signals, with a maximum encoder rate of 4 MHz. The encoder mode is 4X quadrature, and it has a position range of +/- 1,000,000,000 encoder counts. The module draws 700 mA at 5V DC and consumes 3.63 W of power, with a power dissipation of 5.5 W. Its electrical interface is optically isolated, providing protection against electrical noise and interference.
The 1756-M02AE Controllogix 3 Axis Sercos Servo Module also includes features such as home limit switch inputs, drive fault inputs, and drive enable outputs. This module offers flexibility in motion control, providing both open-loop and closed-loop operation, with compatibility for up to 32 axes when used with additional modules. It is ideal for applications requiring precise analog control and feedback.

ControlLogix System Overview
The ControlLogix system provides discrete, drives, motion, process, and safety control together with communication and state-of-the-art
I/O in a small, cost-competitive package. The system is modular, so you can design, build, and modify it efficiently with significant savings in
training and engineering.
A simple ControlLogix system consists of a standalone controller and I/O modules in one chassis. For a more comprehensive system, use the
following:
• Multiple controllers in one chassis
• Multiple controllers joined across networks
• I/O in multiple platforms that are distributed in many locations and connected over multiple I/O links
• Select ControlLogix products are available with a conformal coating that adds a layer of protection when exposed to harsh, corrosive
environments. Products with a conformal coating have a ‘K’ suffix at the end of the catalog number.
The ControlLogix controller is part of the Logix 5000™ family of controllers.
• ControlLogix controllers can monitor and control I/O across the ControlLogix backplane, and over I/O links. ControlLogix controllers
can communicate over EtherNet/IP, ControlNet, DeviceNet, DH+™, Remote I/O, and RS-232-C (DF1/DH-485 protocol) networks and
many third-party process and device networks.
• The controller can be placed into any slot of a ControlLogix chassis and multiple controllers can be installed in the same chassis.
Multiple controllers in the same chassis communicate with each other over the backplane (just as controllers can communicate over
networks) but operate independently.
• To provide communication for a ControlLogix 5570 controller, install the appropriate communication interface module into the
chassis. ControlLogix 5580 controllers have a built-in EtherNet/IP port.
