1756-OB16E Functional Description
The 1756-OB16E is a DC discrete output module designed for use with Allen-Bradley’s ControlLogix programmable automation controllers (PLCs). It provides a robust solution for controlling 24VDC devices, such as relay coils, solenoid actuators, pilot lamps, and sirens. This 1756-OB16E DC discrete output module features sixteen (16) output channels, grouped into two sets of eight channels, each with built-in electronic fuses for protection. The module operates within a voltage range of 10-31.2 VDC, with a nominal output of 24VDC.
Ideal for applications requiring high reliability, the 1756-OB16E DC discrete output module is compatible with 1756 ControlLogix controllers, fitting into various racks like the 1756-A4, 1756-A17, 1756-A10, and more. It can function as both local and distributed I/O, offering versatility in industrial settings. The module supports an output current of 1A per channel at 60°C (140°F), with a maximum current of 8A per module. It also has a surge current rating of 2A per point for 10 ms, repeatable every 2 seconds.
With electronic fusing on each output group, the 1756-OB16E DC discrete output module offers solid protection and efficiency. The module has a minimum load current of 3 mA per channel and operates with a backplane current draw of 250 mA at 5VDC and 2 mA at 24VDC. The power dissipation reaches 4.1 W at 60°C, making it suitable for demanding environments. Moreover, it provides quick response times with 70 µs nominal (1 ms max) for ON/OFF delays, ensuring precise operation in time-critical applications.
This 1756-OB16E DC discrete output module is also designed to withstand routine testing at 1350V AC for 2 seconds, with a continuous isolation voltage of 250V. It operates within a temperature range of 0-60°C, with non-operating conditions from -40°C to 85°C. The 1756-OB16E is a reliable, efficient, and flexible solution for controlling various electrical loads in automation systems.

ControlLogix System Overview
The ControlLogix system provides discrete, drives, motion, process, and safety control together with communication and state-of-the-art
I/O in a small, cost-competitive package. The system is modular, so you can design, build, and modify it efficiently with significant savings in
training and engineering.
A simple ControlLogix system consists of a standalone controller and I/O modules in one chassis. For a more comprehensive system, use the
following:
• Multiple controllers in one chassis
• Multiple controllers joined across networks
• I/O in multiple platforms that are distributed in many locations and connected over multiple I/O links
• Select ControlLogix products are available with a conformal coating that adds a layer of protection when exposed to harsh, corrosive
environments. Products with a conformal coating have a ‘K’ suffix at the end of the catalog number.
The ControlLogix controller is part of the Logix 5000™ family of controllers.
• ControlLogix controllers can monitor and control I/O across the ControlLogix backplane, and over I/O links. ControlLogix controllers
can communicate over EtherNet/IP, ControlNet, DeviceNet, DH+™, Remote I/O, and RS-232-C (DF1/DH-485 protocol) networks and
many third-party process and device networks.
• The controller can be placed into any slot of a ControlLogix chassis and multiple controllers can be installed in the same chassis.
Multiple controllers in the same chassis communicate with each other over the backplane (just as controllers can communicate over
networks) but operate independently.
• To provide communication for a ControlLogix 5570 controller, install the appropriate communication interface module into the
chassis. ControlLogix 5580 controllers have a built-in EtherNet/IP port.
