IC697CHS790 Functional Description
The IC697CHS790 is a 9-slot rear-mounted rack designed for use with the Series 90-70 Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) system. Originally developed by GE Fanuc Automation and now under Emerson Automation, this rack is essential for mounting and connecting IC697 modules. It provides an electronic mounting interface, allowing installed modules to connect to the backplane for power and communication with a CPU or communication adapter.
The IC697CHS790 9-slot rear-mounted rack measures 11.15 inches in height, 19 inches in width, and 7.5 inches in depth, offering a compact design that fits within a 10-inch deep installation space. This rack supports extended I/O configurations, enabling up to two racks to share the same power supply. It includes a dedicated mounting slot for the power supply unit and utilizes four jumpers for rack identification and addressing.
For applications where heat buildup is a concern, the IC697CHS790 9-slot rear-mounted rack can be equipped with a fan accessory. Compatible fan assemblies, such as the IC697ACC721 for 120 VAC or the IC697ACC724 for 240 VAC power, help regulate temperature. The rack also supports power supply extension, requiring the IC697CBL700 power supply extension cable kit when extending the system with additional racks.
The IC697CHS790 9-slot rear-mounted rack is designed to handle a current rating of 20 Amps and operates with a 5V DC power supply. Its mechanical interlocking feature prevents unauthorized module swaps, while its robust grounding and shielding ensure minimal electrical noise. The rack complies with VME standards, making it a reliable choice for industrial automation and control systems.

Series 90-70 PLC
With our CPX family of CPUs, the Series 90-70 offers more for your automation dollar—more computing power, more memory for your applications, and more communications and redundancy capabilities. And it provides increased flexibility for a variety of applications due to a wide range of isolated and high-density VME analog I/O modules.
Open Architecture
Based on the VME-bus standard, the Series 90-70 can be used with thousands of boards produced by hundreds of different manufacturers to build a solution that meets your exact needs. These include links to drives and drive systems, servo motor controllers, embedded solutions for vision systems and bus-to-bus interface modules, as well as a variety of modules available from GE (see accompanying table).
Various Degrees of Redundancy
Combining the Series 90-70 with the advanced functionality of Genius* I/O, GE Genius Modular Redundancy (GMR) systems and Hot Standby systems can provide as much or as little redundancy as you need for your critical applications.
• The versatility and strength of the GMR system make it an ideal choice for rigorous emergency shutdown and human life protection systems. It has a class 6 TÜV rating.
• Based on three isolated PLCs and extensive diagnostics, the GMR triple modular redundancy system uses two-out-of-three voting to provide high reliability and errorfree operation.
• CPU Genius Redundancy (CGR) systems achieve enhanced hot standby CPU redundancy by connecting two power supplies and two CGR CPUs to one or more Genius I/O networks.
