IC697CPU711 Functional Description
The IC697CPU711 is a powerful Central Processing Unit (CPU) module designed for the Series 90-70 platform of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), initially produced by GE Fanuc Automation and now part of Emerson Automation. The IC697CPU711 Central Processing Unit (CPU) module is central to the functionality of a PLC system, executing user logic to enable automation processes. It uses an 80C186 microprocessor with a clock speed of 12 MHz, and a Boolean execution speed of 0.4 microseconds per instruction, ensuring efficient processing.
This CPU module supports a wide range of I/O configurations, handling up to 2Kbytes of discrete inputs and outputs and 8K of analog inputs and outputs. The IC697CPU711 Central Processing Unit (CPU) module is programmed through user-friendly software such as Logicmaster 90-70, VersaPro Professional Edition, and Proficy Machine Edition, all of which provide intuitive interfaces for seamless development and deployment of automation logic. Additionally, the IC697CPU711 Central Processing Unit (CPU) module is expandable, supporting up to 512 Kbytes of expansion memory for increased data handling capacity. It also features password-controlled access for secure program management.
For communication, the IC697CPU711 Central Processing Unit (CPU) module utilizes a VME C.1 Standard format over a rack-mounted backplane, ensuring compatibility with I/O, smart option modules, and various communications modules, including IC697 LAN interface modules and bus controllers. The module also supports a 15-pin D-type serial connection for linking with external devices via RS-485 or RS-422/RS-232 converters.
With its comprehensive support for discrete and analog I/O, along with robust programming and communication capabilities, the IC697CPU711 Central Processing Unit (CPU) module is an ideal choice for industrial automation applications, offering reliability and flexibility in control systems.

Series 90-70 PLC
With our CPX family of CPUs, the Series 90-70 offers more for your automation dollar—more computing power, more memory for your applications, and more communications and redundancy capabilities. And it provides increased flexibility for a variety of applications due to a wide range of isolated and high-density VME analog I/O modules.
Open Architecture
Based on the VME-bus standard, the Series 90-70 can be used with thousands of boards produced by hundreds of different manufacturers to build a solution that meets your exact needs. These include links to drives and drive systems, servo motor controllers, embedded solutions for vision systems and bus-to-bus interface modules, as well as a variety of modules available from GE (see accompanying table).
Various Degrees of Redundancy
Combining the Series 90-70 with the advanced functionality of Genius* I/O, GE Genius Modular Redundancy (GMR) systems and Hot Standby systems can provide as much or as little redundancy as you need for your critical applications.
• The versatility and strength of the GMR system make it an ideal choice for rigorous emergency shutdown and human life protection systems. It has a class 6 TÜV rating.
• Based on three isolated PLCs and extensive diagnostics, the GMR triple modular redundancy system uses two-out-of-three voting to provide high reliability and errorfree operation.
• CPU Genius Redundancy (CGR) systems achieve enhanced hot standby CPU redundancy by connecting two power supplies and two CGR CPUs to one or more Genius I/O networks.
